Sunday Lunch Run 2009 |
||
Following on from a highly successful Autumn tour back in September, Don & Beryl Bray organised an equally successful Lunch Run on Sunday October 11th 2009. |
||
We met at the Redfields Garden Centre for Coffee and headed off to the Farnborough Air & Science Museum. At the museum
we had a most enjoyable presentation on, the larger than life showman, William Cody
and the British Army Aeroplane 1A, "The Cody Flyer".
Almost exactly 101 years, before our visit, October 16th 1908, Cody
took off from near where the Aviation Hotel now stands, and flew for 27 seconds, a distance of 1,390 feet, reaching a height of between 30 and 50 ft. The flight came to a successful, if abrupt end, trying to avoid some trees, when one wing clipped the ground and the aircraft crashed. Cody was unhurt but the plane was extensively damaged. The first powered sustained flight in Gret Britain
had been achieved. The remainder of the museum evokes the ground breaking work, of the Royal Aircraft Establishment and is a tribute to Cody's successors.

After our tour of the museum we headed for an enjoyable lunch at Potters International Hotel, Aldershot. An interesting day out, a good lunch and a great time was had by all. Thanks Don and Beryl very much.
