The Silverstone Classic 2010

The Great JEC Wind Up.

For those of you that don't know The Silverstone Classic is (in the words of the organisers) the Worlds Biggest Classic Racing Festival. Held over 3 days, it offers a great mix of historic and classic racing, the opportunity to get up close to fantastic cars, a aerobatic flying diplay, pop music concerts, a fun fair, a trade village and car club display areas. Silverstone offer a discount deal to the JDC and other car clubs, with privileged parking in the centre of the circuit. Each year we have an impromptu gathering of Area 1 members at this meeting, Phil & Sue Parkinson, Jos Davenport, John Burton, David & Mary East attended this year. Action on and off the track is fast and furious with something of interest for everyone. The stars at this years concert were "Jedwood" for the young ones and Rick Parfitt jnr and others, for the older ones amongst us. On track, marked the return of Sir Stirling Moss to racing after his recent accident. Sir Stirling, understandably, looking a little more frail, lasted better than the car which retired with gearbox trouble.

The evidence.

This year the organisers had put all the Jaguar cars together, which was a much better idea allowing more space for gathering our cars together in a bigger and better display. This meant that we had to share the space with the JEC. I must say the the two clubs worked well together marshalling and parking the ever increasing number of Jaguars.

So why the Great JEC Wind Up? You will remember that Phil and Sue Parkinson organised a bunch of Area 1 flags to be flown from vehicles at National Day and other suitable occasions. On Sunday the "Black Cat" was parked outside the JEC tent and proudly flew it's flag. Much winding up and cross banter ensued as we unfurled the flag, all of it in good humour. Did we win? I was busy talking to some people interested in the car. when I was aware of a figure hovering nearby. He had a Silverstone official badge. "Sorry sir we have had an incident elsewhere of someone being injured by a flag such as yours". "Can you remove it please?" Not one to disobey authority, the flag was removed. Turning around the JEC guys were splitting there sides laughing. So I had been set up! It was a draw as all good wind ups should be. Immediately the JEC guys encouraged us to replace the flag and there it stayed to the end. A fabulous meet, you should try it next year,
