An Evening with Paul Skilleter
The April 2010 meeting was at Mike Byng's house with Paul Skilleter as the guest speaker. Paul is a renowned photographer, journalist, author and publisher as well as an acknowledged authority on Jaguar cars.

Paul's varied and highlly entertaining speech, contiained soemething for everyone commencing with fond and nostalgic images of his first Jaguar a 10 year old XK140 in pastel blue (financed by a small legacy from a pseudo aunt) at the age of 21. At the time Paul was working for Motor magazine the UK's leading motoring magazine which along with its great rival Autocar was a weekly publication. It is hard to imagine todays glossy motoring magazines, with their monthly publication schedule and modern production techniques, matching the quality achieved by Motor and Autocar on a weekly basis. Such publications were the foundaton of many a boyhood dream, Joining "Motor" at the age of 19 was indeed a big break for a fledgling, newly qualified photographer. Paul recounted his interview aand the fact that the Journey from Bournemouth to London was the furthest he had driven his 1950 Hillman Minx.

Life at the Motor was exciting and nurtured an interest in all motor cars which has followed him throughout his life. Illustrated throughout his talk with photographs of classic cars he had owned such as Bentley, Morris Minor and an array of Jaguars.

The love affair with the Jaguar marque began whist Paul was still a student. Paul conjured up images of travelling at speed, at night headlights blazing, on quiet unlit roads between college and London in a tutors Jaguar saloon.

Life at the Motor brought Paul in to contact wth the world of Grand Prix and endurance racing, particularly Le Mans, arguably the pinnacle of all motorsport. Paul was privelged to meet many Jaguar luminaries Lofty England, Norman Dewis, Harry Weslake, designer of the XK engine, and many others.

Motorsport whilst interesting and exciting was only a small part of work at the Motor. Road tests were an important part of the output surrounded by much secrecy as the rivals Motor and Autocar tried to be the first to test a new model . Road Testing an Daimler Double 6 on the Continent at 150 mph with photographic evidence of the dashboard to prove it drew a sharp intake of breath from the audience

Paul continued to work for Motor as a photographer but had begun to write for other magazines usually about Jaguar and had taken over editorship of Jaguar Driver the JDC magazine. Thus it seemed a natural progression to join Thoroughbred and Classic Cars magazine in 1974.

A short step aside from the world of cars, Paul related how he met and married June. It really was a case of marrying the boss's secretary. Paul and June formed PJ Publishing in 1989 to publish Jaguar Quarterly magazine. 10 year later it had become Jaguar World and now owned it is Jaguar World Monthly for which Paul still writes.

PJ publishing continues to publish Jaguar related books if you would like to know more then visit http://www.paulskilleterbooks.co.uk/ . The evening ended with short question and answer session and a book signing.
